The Why

  • California serves over 334,188 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) (as of 2018).

  • 77% of individuals with I/DD in California are living at home with family.  Only 9% are living independently.

  • There is a tsunami wave of individuals with I/DD entering adulthood, but the demand for housing and services is outpacing supplies as many I/DD residential communities are at full capacity.

  • California's I/DD population grew by 39.8% between 2006 and 2016 while the general population grew by 9.5%.

  • Adults with I/DD are now outliving their parents.
